Cutting tools for glass

When cutting glass capillaries, special blades are needed that are made from a material much harder than glass. Normally, a diamond-tipped blade is used here, which has a particularly high level of hardness. Blades made from zirconium oxide are a cheaper and easier alternative. These blades also have a considerably higher degree of hardness and can be resharpened at any time. The blades are particularly well suited to the separation of glass capillaries as the flat cutting point can be precisely drawn over the glass surface. The capillaries are then separated at the broken edge.

This technology even works on the extremely delicate Mark tubes with wall thicknesses of just 0.01 mm. The blades are easily tensioned with our aluminum blade holders and can be used freely with one hand only. Order the practical blade holder to complete the set.

Cutting device for glass capillaries

We have developed a tool based on our diamond wires that allows you to cut glass capillaries with precision. This device is particularly suitable for cutting flat capillaries and very thin-walled, round capillaries in precise, adjustable lengths. This is another tool that we use daily. The cutting device has a clamping support for the diamond wires and an easily adjustable length stop with support surface for the capillaries. This guarantees a reproducible cutting length. All three diameters of the diamond wire can be held in the clamping support. Lengths of approx. 15–200 mm are possible.

  • With length stop 200 mm
  • Changeable diamond wire for scoring the glass surface
  • Length stop adjustable / lockable on sliding guide track
  • Stop surface in glass, for minimum frictional resistance

Diamond wire

When it comes to cutting particularly thin-walled glass capillaries or uneven glass surfaces, it is important to apply the correct pressure to the glass with the cutting tool. Fixed, rigid tools are a clear disadvantage here and quickly lead to the glass splintering or leave uneven cuts and chipping. We have developed a special tool for this purpose, which we use daily in production. It comprises a handle in which a thin diamond wire takes the place of a standard ceramic plate. The wire absorbs the pressure, meaning the surface of the glass can be optimally scored without applying too much pressure to the structure. Depending on the glass thickness, a variety of wire thicknesses are available. By using the smallest diamond slivers on the surface of the wire, a long service life of the tool is guaranteed. The sharp interface is quickly created by rotating the wire.
